Find out what it's like - Experience Soaring with Us!
One way to experience soaring is to sign up for an introductory membership with SVS. Included with an introductory membership is a demonstration flight. After that, you may schedule instructional flights with one of our certified flight instructors. The introductory membership lasts for 3 months from the date of your demonstration flight. This also includes a temporary membership with the Soaring Society of America (SSA), and they will send you an issue of Soaring Magazine. This introduction makes a great gift!
If you want to get a taste of soaring and you're wondering if you or someone you know would like to be a member, contact us to schedule an introductory flight or just come out to the field (directions) on any weekend when the weather is good and meet some of the club members. |
Was it just what you'd hoped it would be? Earn your license as a glider pilot!
SVS has several FAA-certified flight instructors to teach you how to fly sailplanes. You don't need previous experience in flying gliders or power planes to become a sailplane pilot, though you must be an active member of our club to take lessons. In addition to flight training, you must pass an FAA written examination, and in order to receive your private pilot's certificate, you must pass an oral and flight test administered by an FAA examiner. The Soaring Flight Manual forms the core of a student pilot's study. There is no minimum age for taking glider instruction. Youngsters can solo in gliders at age 14, and they can receive their private pilot's license at 16. Power pilots can obtain a glider pilot rating following a specified course of training. They don't have to take the FAA written exam and they don't have to have a current medical certificate. They do, however, have to pass the practical oral and flight tests.
